About Dr. Robert Heaney
Robert M. Heaney, M.D. received his B.S. (Cum Laude) in Mathematics and Chemistry and his M.D. degree (1978) from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Heaney performed his residency in Internal Medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine from 1978 through 1980. He was a Chief Resident in Internal Medicine 1980-1981 at St. Louis City Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and licensed in the State of Missouri.
He is currently a member of the American College of Physicians, the AMA, Missouri State Medical Association, St. Louis Internists Society, and the Association of American Medical Colleges-Groups on Resident Education, Faculty Practice, and Information Resources (GRA, GFP, and GIR).
Dr. Heaney achieved faculty status at Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1981, and is currently Professor of Internal Medicine. Since that time he has practiced General Internal Medicine at Saint Louis University and the St. Louis VAMC, maintained a scholarly focus on preventive medicine, and taught at all levels of the MD and GME Programs and in CME. He was the Course master for Required Senior Ambulatory Clerkship from 1987 to 1994 and oversaw the Internal Medicine Residency’s Ambulatory Practices from 1985-1988. He was named Associate Dean and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for Graduate Medical Education and Veterans Affairs in 1996. He became Senior Associate Dean in November 2008, and Assistant Vice President for Medical Affairs in January 2009. He was appointed to the CEO Office, and then became Chief Executive Officer of SLUCare Physician Group in 2015 through 2018.
Dr. Heaney has had a series of administrative roles in clinical practice beginning with his appointment as the Director of Medicine Outpatient Clinics, National Health Service Corp at St. Louis City Hospital from 1981 to 1985. Others include directorships of Employee Health, St. Louis City Hospital (1982 to 1985), Ambulatory Care, Department of Internal Medicine, Saint Louis University School of Medicine (985 to 1987), Primary Care Group at Saint Louis University Medical Center (1985 to 1988), Saint Louis University Student Health Services (1985 to 1991), and the Division of General Internal Medicine at Saint Louis University Health Sciences Center 1987 to 1995. During this latter period he also served as the Director, PRIME (Primary Care in Internal Medicine Education) Program at the St. Louis VAMC, John Cochran Division 1993 -1995. Several periods of service were also provided in leadership positions on the Medical Staff of Saint Louis University Hospital, including a term as Chairman of the Governing Board. Dr. Heaney directs the University Health Plan, a self-insured, capitated student and resident health plan. He has been the liaison with the Air Force and Missouri Air National Guard for the C-STARS collaboration.
Dr. Heaney currently serves as the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, School of Medicine and Assistant Vice President for Medical Affairs, Saint Louis University Medical Center. In that capacity he serves as the Chief Medical Officer for SLUCare Physicians Group, the clinical practice of the School of Medicine, and administers the PARS Program in collaboration with Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He has chaired their Ambulatory Care Quality Assurance Committee, AAAHC Accreditation Task Force, and the SLUCare Clinical Operations Committee. He served as physician director of Project ARK, SLUCare’s implementation of the electronic health record instance of Epic, which is a national leader in Press-Ganey physician and staff satisfaction and engagement. Dr. Heaney represents Saint Louis University on the VA Affiliations Council (formerly known as the Deans’ Committee), and served as the Chair for several years. More recently he co-chaired with SSM Health St Louis a regional physician leadership council and the Master Facilities Planning Group designing and building new ambulatory care facilities and a new SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital on the Grand Boulevard Campus of Saint Louis University and SSM Health. Dr. Heaney is also an alternate Board member for the Integrated Health Network.
Dr. Heaney is a multiple recipient of the Osler Award from the Internal Medicine Housestaff, Saint Louis University Health Sciences Center. The 1996 American College of Physicians Book Award for the Saint Louis University School of Medicine named in honor of Robert M. Heaney, M.D. He has received the Saint Louis University SLUStar Award; been named to Best Doctors in America; and received Top Doctor Awards. More importantly, he is the blessed spouse of Dr. Mary Susan Heaney, father of three talented children, and proud and lucky grandfather of five wonderful grandchildren, who all reside in St. Louis, Missouri.
